The shining fortune of Sierra Leone in the diplomatic world

By Michael Massaquoi in London

Thursday 28 May 09

Worldwide admiration and respect for Sierra Leone continues to grow by the day as the country enjoys yet another warm reception from the Chinese government and the political class at Westminster.

President Ernest Koroma is currently in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese President, and it is expected that both leaders will use the occasion to strengthen the long standing Sino - Sierra Leone bilateral co-operation.

Talks of China’s role in post war reconstruction, in particular, road construction, identifying and working on new hydro projects, water sanitation, and agriculture are top of the agenda.

The two countries have enjoyed bilateral relationships for decades and the relationship reached new heights during ex-president Kabba’s government with new investment programmes in  Sierra Leone including the Gueji industrial factory in Freetown which has created job opportunities for the local people.

Sierra Leone also continues to gain varied assistance from the world’s fastest growing economic force in many areas including technical and moral support.

President Koroma and his entourage including the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Mrs. Zainab Bangura and the Finance Minister stopped briefly at the Marriott Hotel at Heathrow airport after arriving in the early hours of Saturday morning May 23. The Presidential team was received by Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the UK, His Excellency Melvin Chalobah and Head of Chancery, Mrs. Florence Bangalie.

A source close to the Presidential entourage intimated that President Koroma is optimistic of a fruitful engagement with the Chinese Premier which could add to the $300million investment Sierra Leone has benefited from the Chinese government over the past decades.
